Village RV offers driver training for towing trailers over 4600 kg(10,000 lbs). This class has been run for over 10 years as a non profit course here at Village RV.
There are 3 tests which need to be completed prior to the class. Each test is 20 questions and is multiple choice, which must be done at the SGI Driver testing office at 1550 Sask Dr, Regina. They are also available by booking through SGI at your local Driver testing office located throughout Saskatchewan (a written test in Regina does not require prior booking Monday thru Saturday).
There is a cost of $10.00 to be paid to SGI to take the test and after successful completion you would then need to purchase a $40.00 road test, also payable to SGI.
An SGI Medical form must be completed by your Physician or Medical Clinic. All forms are available at any motor licensing issuer and must be taken in at the time of your physical. Doctors do not have this form. Also, when picking up medical forms, you will need the class 5 drivers handbook and the Professional drivers handbook. There is no charge for forms or books.
The class 5 drivers handbook will contain similar information for when you wrote your learners licence except for a few rules and regulations that have changed over the years, such as you must slow to 60km when passing emergency vehicles. Emergency vehicles now include pretty much any vehicle with flashing emergency lights (tow trucks, highway maintenance vehicles, Police, Ambulance, etc).
Practice tests are available on line at www.sgi.sk.ca.
3 Types of Tests
1st Test: Basic rules and regulations
2nd Test: Signs
You will be shown an array of signs and you will have 4 choices on the definition of each
Such as this one which shows divided highway ends
3rd Test: Which is based on the Professional driver Handbook
On Saturday, you will attend a classroom setting in the AM and topics will include: Maintenance and Inspection of truck and trailer, heavy traffic situations, braking distances, winter driving, turning, entering exiting freeways, etc.
Lunch will be supplied.
In the afternoon, you will see many circle checks and perform your own Circle check. This is necessary as you will be required to complete one at the time of your Road Test. Here is a Video we did last year to give you an idea of what a circle check consists of.
You will go for a drive, with a certified driver instructor, and take a similar route to what SGI will take you on for your actual road test. You will also be asked to complete a 3-point turn and upon return, if you require any further training on backing up, we will have an in cab instruction.
Road tests will be preformed at Village RV- Highway #1 east on Monday and Tuesday with each person booking a 1.5 hour road test, in which SGI will be in attendance. After successful completion of your Road Test, you will be a trained and licensed G-endorsed driver.
Our next and final class until fall, will be on Saturday, April 11th, 2015 from 9am-5pm.
Cost of the Class is $300.00/per person- Truck and Trailer are supplied.
All medicals and written tests must be completed by April 5th, 2015.
